The visa is required to enter the country.
It is possible to obtain VISA at the airport and the visa fee is 20 Rials. (Nov., 2010. )
It also is possible to obtain VISA in Thaibat in the UAE Ras al-Khaimah side for 200 Dhs.
However, it's better to confirm with Omani embassy about the situation before you travel
It is poiisble to obtain VISA at the airport for the following nationals.

EU citizen including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and Vatican but not Cyprus and Malta. Citizens of Albania, Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macedonia, Malaysia, Moldova, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Suriname, Taiwan, Thailand, USA, Uruguay, Venezuela.

The local currencies in Oman is the Omani Rial(OR). 1 Rial = 1000 Baizas.
There are notes of 50, 25, 10, 5, 1, 1/2 (500 Baizas) Rials and 200, 100 Baisas, and also coins of 50, 25, 10, 5 Baisas.

It is better to avoid to accept large notes such as 50 Rials when you exchange your foreign currency since 50 Rials equates almost 100 USD so that it's not very convinient.
Make sure to recieve smaller notes of 5 Rials or 10 Rials.
You can exchange at Most of Banks, also at the airport, moneychangers, the city center, the shopping center in Ruwi or Mutrah Souq.
It is not easy to exchange your foreign currency in local banks outside of Muscat.
You can also use credit cards in many places.

Muscat International Airport is situated approximately about 30 km west of Muscat.
Private Taxi’s are available outside the arrivals hall in the terminal building, it is recommended to pay for your journey at the Taxi counter located outside arrivals.
From Airport to City, about 7 - 15 Rials

Currency of United Arab Emirates (mark = Dhs) can be used in Buraymi in the Musandam and Al Dahirah.
1 Rial = 10 Dhs (there is a gap about 5 % from actual rate).
There is no bank in the checkpoint at the border, and Dhs can be used in Oman without trouble near the border.
